I like to drink wine.
She has been sober her whole life (except that one time 😜).
Yet, she was happy for us to have lunch at a winery.
I can’t sit still for very long.
She’s happy to sit on the couch and chat for hours.
So, she lets me dance around when I need to burn energy, as she sits and laughs.
We go to buy snacks.
She chooses chocolate. I choose the most expensive cheese.
Yet, she offers to pay anyway. I’m happy to carry them in my leopard print backpack.
I love hiking and exploring.
She would happily give it a miss.
Yet, she planned a night at Freycinet National Park for me and hiked her way down to stunning beaches. Despite her nerves and anxiety about the climb up, she came along for the adventure.
She misses her kids that are at home, she’s such a fantastic mum.
I have no children to compare stories with.
Yet, we can talk for hours and ‘kids’ are not always at the centre of our conversation. I’m grateful for that.
She invites the cat to sleep on our bed.
I wish it was a dog.
Yet, I pat it and realise it’s not that bad after all.
I sleep on the right side of the bed, she prefers the left.
She snores. I don’t.
She drools on her pillow. I don’t.
She likes strawberry milk. I like coffee.
She packed a hoodie. I packed a dress.
She prefers her hair up. I prefer mine down.
We have grown so different over our 27 years of friendship, yet we still work.
We just seem to have our balance right. Maybe because we agree that relationships shouldn’t be all give and no take. Shouldn’t be one person always making the effort. One person sacrificing.
For what is a relationship without a little compromise, returned with wholehearted gratitude?
What is a relationship without accepting each other’s differences; appreciating them, growing from them, and challenging each other?
What is a great relationship without a little adventure….
and if all else fails, we’ll always have hot jam donuts. Something we finally agree on.
Seriously, what is a market without hot jam donuts?
For Beck.
My first best friend.
